About the Basic Informatics course

The basic course in health informatics provides an introduction to using some standard software packages, and also looks at some issues that are raised by the development and use of information technology in health care.

The course comprises the following units:

• Unit 1: Introduction
• Unit 2: Databases
• Unit 3: Medline and other Health Databases or Advanced Searching
• Unit 4: Using the Internet for Information
• Unit 5: Reference Manager
• Unit 6: Security and Confidentiality or Security, Firewalls and Viruses
• Unit 7: Spreadsheets or Advanced Spreadsheets
• Unit 8: Clinical Coding
• Unit 9: Publishing on the Web
• Unit 10: Clinical Decision-making

The method of study is entirely on-line and you can work at your own pace. In each unit there are exercises enabling you to try out your new skills. To view a sample of materials from the course, click here

The cost for an individual registration is £250.00. Group rates can be agreed by negotiation. NHS staff may apply to their local Workforce Development Confederation for funding to study this course.
