About the Clinical Research Methods Course

WISDOM has created a new online training course in clinical research methods, specifically tailored to the needs of NHS staff. The course covers research fundamentals such as how to design research, data collection and analysis, ethics and research governance, and how to write a research proposal.

The course materials have been written by Professor Nick Fox, who has 25 years experience of research, and is a leading medical educationalist who has taught research methods to students and clinicians at the University of Sheffield since 1993.

The key issues covered include clinical research designs, validity, sampling, data collection, interpreting and analysing data and ethical approval.

WISDOM is an experienced provider of online training to health and social care staff. We have held a contract to deliver training to specialist registrars in Yorkshire and Humber NHS since 1992, as part of their 'generic' training for a consultant post. More than 1000 staff have taken WISDOM courses during that period. In addition, we provide training to doctors, nurses and managers on an individual basis from across the UK and overseas locations.

The individual fee for the research methods course is £250, making this programme exceptionally good value in comparison to equivalent courses.

Studying with WISDOM

‘This was my first online course, and I found many advantages to doing it this way. Both the lecture material and the discussions I had with colleagues were very interesting on the different subjects tackled by the course.’ ENT specialist registrar

The WISDOM training in clinical research methods is delivered entirely online, making it the ideal way to combine education and clinical duties. The course has been divided into 10 easy-to-manage topics, which together provide a comprehensive training in all aspects of research methodology for clinical studies. Course materials are accessed from a link from this site, meaning you can continue your studies even when away from your regular computer access.

Because you study the course at your own speed, you can take as long as you wish to complete the WISDOM training. However, most participants like to study one topic a week, spreading the training over a ten-week period. If you take the course as part of a group, we can include membership of an electronic forum, with weekly communication from the course tutor Professor Nick Fox, and opportunities to discuss with fellows online.

At the end of the course, you can send in a short log book exercise, in order to receive the certificate of completion.
